The Big Secret About Our Chakras
The charkras are the energy centres in our body. You might have heard of them if you’ve ever taken a yoga class or listened to a podcast by a spiritual teacher. But you might not know what exactly they are or what they do for us. Simply put, the chakras are a series of seven energetic centres (sometimes called energy centres or power spots) that run along your spine and extend through the body, from the base of your spine to the crown of your head. These energy centres are accessed by nerve plexes called nadis, which form channels between each of the chakras. The nadis also come into play in ancient forms of medicine like acupuncture, where tiny needles are pricked into the skin.
Each of the chakras is associated with a different colour and an area of the physical, emotional and spiritual self, and when it’s in balance we experience wellbeing. But the energy that flows through these centres ebbs and flows depending on what’s going on in your life. For instance, if you’re in a dangerous situation like living with an abusive partner or working in a job where you’re exposed to violence on a regular basis, this will affect the way your root chakra functions, making you feel anxious about your safety.
Another example of this is the sacral chakra (Svadhisthana). This is all about our creativity and sexuality. If it’s in a healthy place you might enjoy making art, cooking and enjoying the flavors of your food, sewing and feeling the texture of fabric or garden work and taking time to enjoy nature. It’s important to note that the sacral chakra also governs sex, so you may find that your relationship is a reflection of how this chakra was nurtured as a child.
Similarly, the solar plexus chakra (Manipura) is all about our confidence and sense of personal power, which is why when it’s in balance you might be a confident leader who feels secure in your own strength. When this centre is out of balance it can manifest as stress or a lack of motivation.
Finally, the heart chakra (Anahata) is all about love — both giving and receiving it. When this centre is in a healthy state you might feel open to compassion and forgiveness for others and yourself, embracing a life of service.
The great thing about the chakras is that you can work to keep them balanced with simple activities like yoga, deep breathing and meditation. But it’s important not to get attached to these energy centers, because they’re all illusory and just tools to help you on your path to liberation. If you’re stuck in a chakra blockage, just like traffic in a busy city, bringing your attention to that specific intersection will help the flow of energy unclog.
