Each year, roughly 50 million Americans receive prescriptions for opioids and 10 million currently misuse them. In the past year, over 80,000 Americans died of an opioid overdose. Data from the US Council of Economic Advisers estimates that the opioid epidemic causes $1 trillion in annual costs. While controlled substances are highly regulated, they are overprescribed by 3.3B pills a year, dispensed with 1960’s technology (child safety bottle), and rarely are properly disposed of. A better system is needed to control and monitor at-home dispensing and simplify excess pill disposal. Columbia University recently completed a study using a low-cost medication dispensing system developed by Addinex Technologies that includes a patented dispenser that limits dosage access based on a patient’s prescription, a mobile app that educates patients and allows a clinician to remotely manage treatment, and a DEA-approved mailer for safe disposal of excess pills.
Jay Schiff, Co-Founder & CEO of Addinex, is a former Wall Street executive who has invested in dozens of small- and mid-sized companies, leading investing businesses at Merrill Lynch, a $1 billion private equity firm, and a fintech company. In addition to Addinex, Jay consults for clients in need of his corporate finance expertise and is an angel investor and advisor to various early-stage companies. Jay is a patent-holder and has earned a BA in Economics from Cornell University College of Arts & Sciences and completed the MBA in Finance and MS in Accounting programs at NYU Stern School of Business.
