Unlocking Your Greatness

By Wendy Bjork

After living with Multiple Sclerosis for more than 35 years, I have noticed something interesting.

The conversations around MS are changing.

When I was first diagnosed, most discussions centered around symptoms, medications, and what the future might hold. Those conversations remain important, but today I hear people asking different questions.

How do I create a meaningful life with MS?

How do I maintain hope during uncertainty?

How do I support my body without letting a diagnosis define who I am?

How do I continue growing, contributing, and dreaming?

As I prepare to attend the upcoming MS Views and News event in Madison WI this July, I find myself less focused on finding answers and more interested in exploring the questions.

What do people living with MS need most right now?

For some, it may be access to care. For others, it may be practical tools for navigating fatigue, mobility challenges, or cognitive changes. For many, it may simply be connection with others who understand what this journey feels like.

One of the gifts of community events is the opportunity to listen. Not just to experts, but to the experiences of people who are living with MS every day.

I’m especially interested in hearing from Dr. Christopher Luzzio of UW Health, who will be discussing questions people should be asking their neurologists.

As patients, we often spend years learning how to advocate for ourselves. Yet many of us still leave appointments wishing we had asked one more question or shared one more concern. I’m curious about what conversations could help us become stronger partners in our own care.

I am also looking forward to hearing from MS advocate Paul Pelland, known as “Long Haul Paul.”

His presentation compares living with MS to riding a motorcycle through one of the world’s toughest competitions on an unreliable bike.

That metaphor immediately made me smile.

Anyone who has lived with a chronic condition knows that some days the journey feels smooth and predictable. Other days it feels like you’re navigating unexpected twists, detours, and repairs along the way. Yet somehow, we keep moving forward.

Perhaps the question I am most curious about is this:

What gives people hope today?

Hope doesn’t always arrive in dramatic ways. Sometimes it comes through research. Sometimes through a conversation. Sometimes through hearing someone else’s story and realizing you’re not alone.

I also wonder what challenges remain unsolved.

People living with MS continue to face obstacles ranging from fatigue and mobility issues to isolation, access to care, and the unique challenges of living in rural communities. What progress is being made? Where do we still have work to do?

And what new conversations are emerging?

Every community evolves. New priorities rise to the surface. New possibilities appear. Often the most meaningful insights happen between sessions, over lunch, or during conversations in the hallway.

Those moments tell us just as much about the future as any presentation.

If you’re living with MS, caring for someone who is, or simply interested in the evolving conversations shaping this community, gatherings like this provide an opportunity to learn, connect, and explore what comes next.

As for me, I’ll be arriving with a notebook, an open mind, and a healthy sense of curiosity.

Because sometimes the most important breakthroughs begin not with an answer, but with a question.
