A Special Light for the New Work World

A dear friend recently shared how he has experienced the summer solstice over the years, and it made me think about its broader application to the New Work World. It is interesting how a well-known annual event can carry profound meaning and encourage us to reflect on how it applies to other areas of our lives.

This year, the summer solstice occurred on June 21, 2026, at 3:24 a.m. CDT in Houston. It marked the moment when the Northern Hemisphere was tilted most directly toward the sun, giving us the longest day of the year and ushering in the official start of summer. For centuries, cultures around the world have celebrated the solstice as a return to light. Perhaps it can also serve as a reminder of the light within each of us and the potential we all possess to awaken a deeper sense of purpose, identity, and connection.

As a gal who grew up in the Detroit area, where winters are long and often bitterly cold, I have always appreciated the summer solstice as a welcome sign that a new season has truly begun. After enduring months of darkness and cold, we embrace the warmth and brightness of summer. Metaphorically, many of us may also be ready for a new season of light, growth, and positive illumination in our professional lives.

One of humanity’s earliest astronomical observations may hold deeper meaning for all of us as we navigate the New Work World. Let us consider some of the spiritual messages behind the summer solstice and how they might help illuminate our career journeys as we move through the second half of 2026 and beyond.

1. Honor the Sun

The summer solstice is a celebration of the sun, but it can also remind us of the powerful light that exists within each of us and our ability to let it shine. We have the opportunity to “flick the switch” and allow that inner light to radiate, not only for our own benefit but also in ways that positively impact our workplaces, colleagues, companies, and communities.

Can you volunteer for a new project? Can you assist a coworker who is overwhelmed and, in the process, learn a new skill yourself? How might you bring fresh ideas and renewed energy into your work environment to create more positive and productive outcomes? Employers, too, can shine a new light on hiring by considering transferable skills, growth potential, and patterns of accomplishment rather than focusing solely on traditional qualifications.

2. It’s a Time of Rebirth

The summer solstice can also symbolize rebirth. How might this be a time for you to rediscover interests and passions that align more closely with your long-term goals and who you truly are? How can you cultivate greater joy and fulfillment in your professional life?

What aspects of your career feel out of alignment with the person you aspire to become? What steps could open the door to new and expansive experiences? Employers might also consider new ways of evaluating talent. For example, in sales, success is often influenced not only by what candidates know, but also by whom they know. A candidate with related experience and a strong network may offer significant opportunities for business growth. Shining a new light on hiring practices may reveal valuable talent that might otherwise have been overlooked.

3. Honor the Changes

The summer solstice reminds us that change is inevitable. It marks the changing of the seasons and reflects the natural rhythms of the Earth. While basking in the warmth and abundance of summer is enjoyable, eventually every season shifts, inviting us to reflect, regroup, and prepare for what comes next.

What strengths or insights have emerged from the changes you have experienced? Is there a project, goal, or dream you once set aside that deserves another look? Honor the transitions in your life for the growth they may have inspired. Reach out to trusted professionals who can help you better understand workplace trends, talent shortages, and emerging opportunities.

4. Welcome the Transformation

The changing seasons not only reflect our journey around the sun, but they also remind us of the internal growth available to each of us. Aligning ourselves with nature’s cycles can encourage us to become more intentional about our goals, dreams, and aspirations.

Ask yourself: What can you do now, inspired by the recent summer solstice, to continue learning and growing? How will you direct your energy toward the many possibilities life has to offer? Allow this once-a-year event to become an opportunity to refocus on your goals and open yourself to exciting new beginnings or rediscovered passions that energize your soul.

The next six months begin here. Consider writing down one meaningful intention, speaking it aloud with conviction, and returning to it often. By the time the December solstice arrives, you may look back and realize that this was the moment when everything quietly began to change.

Look to nature to illuminate the path toward new beginnings and becoming our best selves. In doing so, we can help others discover new opportunities, contribute meaningfully to their organizations, and make a positive impact on the world, especially in the New Work World. Welcome this opportunity to awaken, expand, and allow the light within you to glow brightly as you move into the final six months of 2026 and beyond.
